For all the noobs out there this is more inlikely the most easy to ROOT your Eris!!!!!! HAPPY ROOT'IN

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=742228

I Ripley,  have edited to include instructions rewritten for clarification.

Step 1: Download and install the one click apk or get it from the market and install it.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8699733/erisone010.apk - VERSION 0.1.0

Step 2: Run one click program, read disclaimer, press button.

Step 3) Reboot into recovery mode. Do this by turning the phone off and then turning it back on by simultaneously holding the Vol Down and Power Button. This will boot you into HTC's white screen HBOOT. You will see the following:

HBOOT

<SEND> FastBoot Mode
<VOL UP> Recovery

Select recovery with volume up button

Step 4: You will see a black screen with green writing(sorry but no time for screenshots today), this is called Android System Recovery, which you will see at the top of the black screen in green.  Using Amon's recovery(Android System Recovery) with the trackball to navigate and select, pick the backup/restore option.  Then select Nand backup with trackball, press trackball to confirm.

Step 5:  Once the backup is complete, press the Vol Down button to return to the main menu.

Step 6: Once back at the main menu, pick "Flash Zip from SDCard" and then select rootme.zip that came with the one click program.

Step 7:  Press the Vol Down button to return to the main menu and select "Reboot System Now"

Step 8:  Once the phone is re-booted, go to settings>applications>development and turn usb debugging on.

Step 9: I would suggest getting quickboot from the market. This will make flashing a new rom of your choice much faster.

Thanks to Jcase and PRJ.

what does this allow you to do, can you install apps to the SD card or do you need one of the froyo versions to complete it?

This will allow to root from there you can flash new roms.  It works great that's what I used and now I am running the nonsensikal froyo. With froyo you get the ability to move to SD cards. If you don't you can look around on here and I believe there was something Ellsworth you can do to get that if you don't feel comfortable flashing a new rom.

Okay, so I must be more of a noob than some.  I downloaded it, but, I must be low on space, so, I have to go and get rid of some things and try again.
Now, I need some more in-depth directions on the rebooting, etc.  Haven't done it in quite awhile, since the leaked 2.1 version, and don't want to screw things up.

Help?

I just did this 5minutes ago and I didn't brick my phone, but there is no evidence I'm rooted either. As far as the reboot goes, turn your phone off, turn it on and immediately press volume down and power and it will go to the boot menu.

Okay, I believe I've successfully rooted.  Now, how do I find Froyo, or any of the other cool and groovy reasons to root?

 Cool

I too have rooted successfully and I'm wondering, if we can root so easily can we flash roms without a pc? Which will be awesome since my laptop crapped out on me and I have no comp right now.

You can flash roms from your phone, but it can be painstaking cause they can be up to 100mb
