Did you unzip the rom file?  Is the unzipped rom in the tools folder of the sdk file?

Sounds like your PC is not "seeing" the phone. Check through your pre-steps only put the phone in USB debugging mode LAST. You should get a reaction from the PC.

What is your OS?

Hack file needs to be unzipped(extract for me)
Sdk file needs to be unzipped(extract)
Rom , do not unzip
put hack and rom in tools folder of sdk
put sdk folder in your C:\  (windows) here

You may have done this already.

No, I used ddms.bat. You can find it in sdk\tools.

8)Will this root tutorial work on a Eris running firmware 2.1? Is it worth rooting my phone when it is already running version 2.1? I have never rooted a phone before.

Yes, this will root any Eris. My opinion is that it is worth it but that is something you have to decide for yourself.

Wow, fast reply. Thanks. Going to attempt to root my 2.1 phone right now!!! I was under the assumption that once you did the ota 2.1 upgrade from the original stock 1.5, the option to root was gone.
