Try a different USB-port on your computer. One of my ports conked out on me recently. Try rebooting both. If all else fails get a new cord. If you have a TI-84 calculator in your house the USB cord that comes with that will work in a pinch.

Some people have also reported that certain USB cables do not work.  Are you using the original one that came with phone?

Cable is the most common issue. Some old USB controllers are known to not recognize devices properly, unless you go and tell them to scan. (device manager).
I found some external USB hubs cause this kind of issue, too.
Finally, Cruze C3 USB thumb drives (old version) can freeze the ports (software issue). Restarting computer will solve this one.

Could be the ROM - I've seen differences in USB behavior between one or the other ROMs. If you've tried everything else you might try a different ROM.

This may be caused by your computer's OS. If you have Windows 7, there's a process you have to go through in order to get it to work. ADB doesn't work right away in Windows 7 I believe..

I've had the same problem since i flashed KaosFroyo earlier today. ive been going in through the recovery menu. MS to something i cant remember. the only option with ms though. remember u have to already be connected before you boot the recovery up or it won't acknowledge being plugged into anything
