I just had to replace a wireless DSL modem due to a lightning strike. The old modem was a westell that I got from AT&T when I signed up for DSL. The new modem is a netgear I got from Best Buy. The new modem is a wireless-N modem. Not sure about the old one but it was probably a wireless-G.
The problem? My Eris finds the Wi-Fi signal and says it is connected to it, but the internet doesn't work. I get a pop up note saying I have no connection....even though the phone says I am connected. I am in the country and have a week signal.....therefor I use the Wi-Fi connection on the phone to surf the web with the Eris.

Any ideas? Is it the wireless-N that is giving me the problem?

And now - a man with a tape recorder...up his nose

Here's a quote from a post I made a long time ago -

"So after a bit of diddling around I got my Eris and my Belkin G/N router to play nice together (updated the router firmware seems to be the actual fix). Now it connects flawlessly at home and at work and I can help with access issues at work with the WIFI Analyzer - The Net Admins are pea-green.

However, if you turn off the Broadcast SSID on the router the droid no longer connects. Setting are all remembered but no fire. Nothing I can find in the manual - and kinda limited settings - doesn't appear to be a feature. Has anybody run into either what I am missing or an app that can correct this? "No SSID" is a nice added security feature on the home access point and I'd rather keep it on  .  "

Turns out the SSID must stay on so "make it so". Otherwise you can treat your Eris just like any other wireless device on your router. If you are running static IPs it will be a bit tricky but not impossible (DHCP is easier). Don't forget the if you have secured your router with MAC filtering (HOORAY for you!) that you must add the phone to the filter table. BTW I'm using WPA2 and Wireless-N with no problem.

Good Luck!

PS - Let me know if you have more questions.

No problem!

The fact that the router is unsecured at this point makes troubleshooting that much easier. In your case start by updating the firmware in the router and then resetting it to factory defaults.

Once you get connected up then when you get ready to secure the router you can test the Eris at each step to make sure you don't accidentally "lock it out"  Grin

Monty1,

I meant to let you know that I never could get that wireless-N router working. My laptops had compatibility issues too for some reason. I am on AT&T service so I went back to a modem that was supposed to be FastAccess compatible....and it was. After setup with the AT&T modem.....everything worked fine. Just FYI stuff......
And thanks again for you help with this!

First thing is what is the wireless card in the laptop - brand and model - even if it's the internal one, make and model. Second, what firmware version is on the 655?
