This info courtesy Conflipper on XDA & thenestor from android forums.

If you are currently on a leak (any version v1, v2 or v3) and want to have the "official" software, maybe this is what you've been waiting for.

***THIS WILL WIPE THE PHONE CLEAN EXCEPT FOR WHATS ON YOUR MEMORY CARD. BACK UP EVERYTHING YOU WANT BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS***

As expected, the ROM within the RUU is completely identical to "leak v3." However, it's much easier for non-technical folks to flash using the RUU than using the zip-on-card method. If you're on leak v1 or leak v2, this is the easiest way to upgrade to v3, which is the same as the OTA.

Its done through the PC, so attach your phone via usb cable and click on the .exe on your PC and follow instructions.

I would have to say that I will not be doing this. The leak v3 has been running so smoothly with no problems on my phone. I have been reading about the disasters everyone has been having with the OTA. I'm just ready for Froyo, when's the leak coming? Ha Ha, sorry, just had to throw that in there.

I'm afraid I would have to agree with zeravlapd. I've been running on v3 from a week or so after it came out (it's all your fault JRocker!) and it has run smooth as glass. I can't think of any benefit that I would garner and the liabilities are all too obvious, especially with a phone like mine that is absolutely LOADED with apps. Besides, I'm still thinking about rooting this bad boy (if the opportunity presents itself).

Nonetheless, it's good to know that we have the option.   Grin

The only advantage (if we can call it that) is it will upgrade your build number to match the OTA that went out. This way if verizon or anyone looks at the phone, they will see the OTA file installed.

Still I dont see any need to unless someone isnt on v3. Plus what I hear is people over at XDA are working on a Froyo update for eris.

Will see

very cool but i think i am going to stick with my v3 leak as well.  i haven't had any real problems in a while almost as if they ironed out themselves.

Anyone else that does this(from v3), keep us posted on how well your phone runs. I agree with JRocker in the fact that if something happens to my phone, I won't have insurance issues.

I loaded up last night just to see what the difference would be,so far its been great,my wife is still on v3 but its identical and shes never has any problems but i will do hers today just to have the official update, I don't think it would be worth it if you have paid apps but if you want the official version then go for it.

Thanks again to Jrocker for keeping us all informed!

On v3 here and decided not to install the OTA.  My phone seems to be the acting the way schism stated, as if it has ironed out its problems.  Have not rebooted, no dialer lag and no silent calls in a month.  I have been trying to throw everything at it to make it act up and the phone keeps getting better.  Hope I didnt just jinx myself...lol
