Does anyone know what the update was for that was pushed to my Eris this morning (March 3, 2001) from HTC?  I don't keep track of upcoming updates and so was surprised when an update came my way.

What did the update say?  HTC does not send out updates, the phone carrier Verizon does.

I don't remember exactly what it said; just that an update was going to be installed and that I wouldn't be able to use the phone until after it had restarted and the update had been applied.  I clicked the "More Info" button but that information was no more descriptive than the initial message.

Verizon has started sending out updates to adress minor fixes in some phones. Root phones will not see it unfortunately.

If your phone isnt rooted and the ping from verizon sees that your phone needs the update it will prompt you to install. Dont know yet what it is fixing yet but a few devs are working on getting the update zip and seeing if it is needed or can be added to new rom builds.

We will know soon hopefully.

Verizon and HTC are encouraging Droid Eris customers to download and install the latest firmware update: ROM: 2.41.605.6/Radio: 2.42.01.04.27. The new update is designed to improve wireless connectivity and expand media sharing and social networking features. Included in the update is improved Bluetooth performance with Mercedes-Benz E350 automobiles, a streamlined Twitter authentication login, an easier to read received signal strength indicator display, and even Visual Voice Mail. In addition, Calendars can now be synced via Microsoft Exchange. Users can also send and receive videos, pictures and even audio messages with or without text and over multiple networks.

Users can plan on a software download and update time of between 10-25 minutes to incorporate the 13MB file which will come as an “over the air” (OTA) update. Users will be prompted to press the “Install Now” button and the Eris device will reboot to begin installation. There is an option to install the update later, but users will be nagged every 30 minutes until they install it. And to manually install the update after notification, users can go to “Home” > “Menu” > “Settings” > “About phone” > “System updates”, then press “Restart & install”. Users will be unable to make calls or use the Eris for other activities while the update is being installed since the device will restart several times during the install. If the update fails, users are advised to remove and reinsert the battery, then power the device back on. The original software will load and users will be prompted again to install the update.

Please note, however, that if users are roaming, there will be no system update notice in order to save on roaming charges. Users will then have to enable WiFi and select an available WiFi netork to receive the update via WiFi.

Any truth to what?
Is there an OTA update? yes.
Should you download it? If you get the notification you probably should (rooted users will not get the notification).

If the ping to your phone shows that the files are fine, you will not see the update or you may have not ben sent the update yet.

Verizon usually sends out the update over a 2 week period. It starts off just to a few and then expands if all seems ok. The rollout just started so give it up to 2 weeks..

I actually rooted my eris for the first time 2 days ago.  And i saw OTA update message popup on my phone this morning.  Is it safe to have it go through the install?  If not, how can i get it to stop popping up the reminder messages?

If your rooted and have a rom installed, the update will fail if you try to install it and then no more notifications. If you rooted and left the stock rom and didnt change it, the update will go thru and unroot your phone back to the way it was when it was bought. It will just be the latest software 2.1
