I have a dumb question. If you received the update and have not rooted yet, does that mean you have to wait for a root for the updated OS?

I don't think the current root method has been tested on the latest update. If you plan to root then it would be best to do it before you get the update just to be safe.

If you already got the update then go ahead and try to root, let us know if it works.

So Chewy, now that you got the update are you still going to try to root your phone? It would be interesting to see if it will work.

No, I haven't taken the time yet to do this root.  I have been tapping away the past 2 days on my Java program for class.  I just couldn't get away to try the root process.
Maybe someday soon. Wink

Hey guys I found a download link for the ota update rolling out. It's a lot smoother and no more silent calls. http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/07/18/droid-eris-owners-get-fix-for-silent-call-issue-with-maintenance-release-4-download-link-inside/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+AndroidPolice+%28Android+News%2C+Reviews%2C+Applications%2C+Games%2C+Phones%2C+Devices%2C+Tips%2C+Hacks%2C+Videos%2C+Podcasts+-+Android+Police%29

I'm debating on trying this. Has anyone taken the plunge with the manual update route? Granted, I did use the RUU utility to bring my Eris to the stock 2.1 OTA so trying this really shouldn't be an issue for me. :p

Ok. Got the phone rooted after the OTA update. Now running Evil Eris. Not bad. Of course I didn't finish until about 11 last night, so I haven't had a chance to play with it too much.

Anyone notice any signal strength or battery life changes? There is a new radio with the update and it can supposedly improve signal but may potentially reduce battery life. Just wonder because the new radio can be installed on rooted devices but there is no point if it doesn't really help. Thanks guys!

Also, how is the update so far? Better?

Sik,
Hoestly, I can't tell a darn bit of difference from the previous state of the phone.
Now, I haven't ever had any issues with my Eris, so this update actually might make more of a difference to those people who have had issues.

My battery life has always been great, and I haven't talked on the phone enough recently to tell if there is a better signal or quality.

Well I got my ota update today. Im on v3 and I woke up this morning and installed it. I can tell a difference with the messaging because it loads a lot faster and it doesn't lag like it did before. I have no more silent calls it picks up as soon as a I hit the call button. It actually helped me out a pretty good bit. Way to go big red but u still need to push more updates instead o >:(f coming out wit new phones every 2 weeks
