read this on one of the child boards.
The forthcoming Droid 2 2 and X Android devices on Verizon will be the first Motorola Android devices sold in the US from the manufacturer sold with digitally signed bootloaders in order to prevent flashing to customized builds of Android developed by the modification community.

While the locked bootloader does not completely prevent ROM flashing, it does make the process more complicated and involved than simply developing the ROM and installing on the device, as the bootloader has to be reverse engineered in order to allow flashing on the device, similar to the methodology for jailbreaking the iPhone.

It's pronounced es-kal-uh-vee. Learn it. Know it.

I did read about this.  Just another reason I dislike Moto phones.

"It looks like a new trend is beginning with HTC. First it was the Thunderbolt and now it looks like the Incredible S has a signed bootloader and recovery image. This means you will not be able to install custom ROMS unless someone discovers a viable workaround.

If you are somehow able to flash a custom recovery to your phone, HTC’s signature check will kick in. If the signature check sees anything other then the stock HTC key, you will not be allowed to access recovery, which means you cannot flash custom ROMS.

This lockdown is something new at HTC so the androidpolice contacted HTC at CTIA. They were told it was from carrier pressure. If the Incredible S is an unlocked GSM device, how could a carrier cause this? It sounds like they could be fed up with warranty claims of bricked phones from failed mods. Motorola adopted this same strategy last year. I had heard that there were a lot of claims for bricked Droids and that was most likely the cause for their change of heart. Either way, it sounds like this will be the norm for HTC moving forward."

HTC didnt lock it to well as the Thunderbolt was signed as well and they rooted almost immediately. Moto may be harder but HTC really arent an issue right now...

Forgive me if this is a repost, but this is taken from HTC's Facebook page on May 26.

Woot for HTC!

"There has been overwhelmingly customer feedback that people want access to open bootloaders on HTC phones. I want you to know that we've listened. Today, I'm confirming we will no longer be locking the bootloaders on our devices. Thanks for your passion, support and patience," Peter Chou, CEO of HTC

I simply don't understand why a manufacturer would do something like locking down the OS on a phone. Why? So they could force upgrades that essentially downgrade your phone (like Apple) and force you to buy a new phone to keep up?

A-holes. Screw 'em. I used to really like Moto. But that leaves a real bad taste in my mouth. I will avoid them until they come to their senses.

Trust me. A locked, encrypted bootloader is terrible! There are few roms and they are mostly the same
