Hi!
My name is Wayne if you couldn't guess from my cryptic username. Smiley

My brother-in-law switched to a different service provider and gave me his old Eris.
I will activate it probably in a couple of weeks. Can't afford the increased data fee until then.

This will be my first smartphone. I am using an LG Chocolate Touch right now with Verizon. I have been debating whether or not to go with a droid or iphone, since the iphone is coming out soon on Verizon. But I'm not eligible for a phone upgrade until June of 2012, so I would have to wait a while. But since my bro-in-law hooked me up with an Eris, I am going to just try it for now. And I have from now until June of 2012 to decide if I like Droids, or want to switch to the iPhone. I'll either get a newer droid at that point or the iphone-4.

I really like the iPhone, and a lot of friends have it. But I am not one to do something just because it's trendy. So I definitely want to give the Droid a chance. And I've heard very good things about the Eris anyway. The only negative thing I've heard about the Eris is that it's a little laggy. But I'm sure it won't be as laggy as my current phone, so I probably won't even notice. Smiley

Is it true that the 2.1 Eclair OS is available for the Eris, but 2.2 Froyo is never going to be officially released for the Eris?

I know it can be flashed for whatever, but to me the Eris is customizable enough without hacking it.

So nice to be here.
I'm in the houston, TX area. Actually further south toward Galveston.

2.1 is standard on the Eris. You are correct, in that Froyo won't be officially pushed to the Eris.

Welcome to the forum. I hope you enjoy your Android experience as we all do!

welcome, and about the question on the bottom. Yes eclair (2.1) is the only operating system verizon will put on your phone. BUT most of us on the website are fluent at rooting and can help you out with getting froyo (2.2) on your eris, and maybe even a splash of gingerbread (2.3)

Please forgive me if this question has been answered a million times. But I have read a ton of threads on here and haven't seen the answer yet.

1. Why is Froyo or even Gingerbread better than Eclair? Is it a major overhaul, or just minor tweaks?

2. Will HTC Sense still work if I root my phone, and put one of these themed newer OS's on the phone? If not, would I miss it?

This phone has been out of warranty for some time, so I'm not worried about voiding the warranty. And so many people have rooted and rom'd the Eris apparently without problems, that I'm not so worried about bricking either. I guess I am just coming into Android from a feature-phone, so it's already going to knock my socks off even just the stock Eris. So would it be worth it to root and rom this phone for me?
If customization is the only real reason for doing this, then I will probably pass. But if there are other pros, like compatibility with newer apps, etc. I might be interested.

I've been using the Eris now for about three days, and so far I am really liking it.
It does get a little laggy from time to time, but then there are other times when it just smokes, so I'm not complaining. Like when scrolling through my 3,500 or so mp3's on my MicroSD card, my old phone would lag big-time, but the Eris just zipped through them as smooth as silk. Even the pictures (of which I have a ton) loaded quickly and I was impressed how easy it was to manage them.

Downloading apps is a breeze.
I've already installed Pandora, IHeartRadio, App Killer, and a few games.
I've customized all but one of my screens. Piece of cake.

The phone is very intuitive, easy to set everything up.

I listen to talk radio a lot, and for some reason my AM stations lately have been really flaking out. THey will work for a little while and then go out for no reason. But I have a really good FM transmitter in my car, the kind that goes physically in series with the antenna wire. I used ths for a wired handsfree kit for my car. And also to play mp3's through my stereo. Well, I just opened up IHeartRadio and loaded the channel I normally like to listen to on the radio, and plugged it in. And Oh My Gosh. It sounds fantastic! Way better than the radio ever sounded. Clear as a bell. The same was true for Pandora. Of course it drained th carp out of my battery, but I'll have to get a car charger if I'm gonna be doing that very often.

I've also already seen that I need a work charger as well. The battery just doesn't hold up very well.

Part of that might be that this was my brother-in-laws old phone, and he hasn't used it for at least 6 months or so. So the battery has been completely dead for that long, which I'm sure isn't good for the battery. Maybe once I've been using it for a while it will get better.

I love this phone though. My co-worker just got his Verizon iPhone4 yesterday, and we were comparing. So far I wouldn't trade him given the chance. I am much more impressed with my phone than his.

Yes Pandora playing for any length of time drains the battery greatly.
