Hi.  My name is Nathan.  My Eris is the first cell phone I have had since my old grey motorola brick back in the early 90s.  I love this phone.  Since I understand it has been discontinued, I will have to try to buy a second one "used" as a back up.  I have no intention of getting another phone.  This phone is awesome.

Welcome to the forum.  How are you able to keep a phone for so long?  I am too rough on mine and usually have to get a new one when my renewal comes up.

I carried the old phone for about 6 years for my job in Seattle.  When I left the job, no phone.  My daughter got me the Eris and prior to that I wasn't carrying a phone.  I wouldn't have a cell phone if my daughter didn't insist that I carry one so that she can contact me.  She is in Seattle and I am in Huntsville, AL.  This Eris is the coolest electronic device of any kind, I have ever had.

I'm definately going to look into the "rooting".  I will have to do some reading.  Hear a lot about it here, but prior to looking at this site, had never even heard of it.  Not even sure what it is or what it does.  I am certainly interested, but am reluctant to jump into anything, only because the phone works fine as is, I mean really fine.

Smarter than you know.  Even though she lives somewhere else, I consider her and her boyfried to be my resident, in house, tech geeks.  She must be trying to live a life now or something.  She is starting to get little slow on answering my questions.  I'll have to do something about that.

well... ROOT just gives you acces to pretty much every functionality of the phone, if you dont have a specific purpose in mind you don tneed to do it unless you just want to test it out.  If you root it and that's all then it will be the exact same except now you have higher access... doesnt do much good.

LUCKILY for those of us who aren't creative -or lack the know how- there are ROMs made by other people.

Two advantages you can get from ROMs and ROOT is -currently- your phone will be upgraded to 2.2 and have more features.  More in depth, 2.2 will not come out OTA (over the air) meaning unless you ROOT or illegally upgrade (not illegal by law it just voids your warranty -if they find out/even care)  your phone.  Also certain apps that you do not use can be taken out to save space and just about everything can be changed

One thing you may have noticed is that the Eris has the sizes preset for everything you may want to put on the homescreen, after the upgrade you can choose the size (if i am wrong correct me, but i believe it is a feature of 2.2 and not ADWlauncher that allows you to choose the sizing of widgets/apps you place on the homescreens)

I say you play around with it as is and once you are content or want more just look into these things

*Messenger
-Handcent
-ChompSMS

*Keyboards
-better keyboard
-swype
-SlideIT

*Games
-RoboDefense
-Gem Finder

*Root/ROMs
-KaosFroyo
-NonSensikal

These are just the most widely talked about/used apps when it comes to android phones so thats just a starting point, there are SO many things out there that im sure you'll find great contributions as well. i just want to get you started Wink  Go ahead and lose your social life to this intriguing device we call a cell phone ha as if, its probably 1 part cell phone 99 parts everything else Smiley
