I assume you are running software 1.5 that came with the phone.  Youtube does not work correctly with 1.5.  You have to go through the browser to play youtube correctly the first time.  You can update with the leaked 2.1 or wait till Verizon rolls out the update to everyone.  Youtube is fixed with 2.1.
