The phone should do it automatically. The key it to make sure all of your contacts are "Google" Contacts instead of "Phone" contacts. If they are not then they will need to be converted before you can get them to sync, There are a few ways to do this. If there are not too many you can just re-create them in G-mail and remove the originals from the phone. Otherwise you will need to look at exporting them and importing them into G-mail - a bit more complex.

Sounds like this will take some organizing. How many of them are Google Contacts now? What we are looking to do is between the two types, manipulate the smaller group.

That should make life easier! So go in to People and go Menu>Import/Export>Export to SD Card - note the file name of the export file [filename.vcf] and click OK. this will export your contacts to a single file.

Now, turn off your Google Sync for a bit - Menu>Accounts and Sync>Google and turn off "Sync Contacts".

Next connect your phone to your computer and copy [filename.vcf] to a place you can find it on your computer.

Open your Internet Browser on your computer. Go to your G-mail account, open contacts and select Import (upper right part of the screen), choose your [filename.vcf] and click the Import button. This should import all of your contact to G-mail. Check and make sure they are all there.

Now, go to the phone and delete all the phone contacts.

Finally, turn on the "Sync Contacts". Your phone contacts should now all be Google contacts! Smiley

Great post.  What if you have mixed contacts?  I have some gmail, some phone - don't care about the facebook ones.  I have been a failure at syncing my phone.  I would appreciate your help.

Following Monty's procedure should work fine. The only additional process you need is to use the "Find duplicates" and then "Merge". This will merge all your existing Google contacts again and your Phone contacts will be synchronized now.

I know it's not going to happen in 2 seconds, but I followed these steps exactly and after almost 15 minutes, my phone is still not done syncing. I have 175 contacts, should it be taking this long or is there something wrong?
*EDIT* It actually doesn't even look like it's syncing. Doesn't the little green icon with the arrows spin when syncing? Is there a way I can manually try syncing?

Did you log into gmail and check your contacts. U really wont see it sync. Also you can go into gmail and it will teach you have to save your contacts as a file and load it into gmail...

Also did you go into accounts and sync and select google to sync?

Sorry if these were asked before. Just want to make sure...

Everything works now, not sure what was going on the other day. However, I have a new question about the end result. I just went to contacts in my gmail via computer, there is 2 of every single contact. I went to my contacts on my phone, clicked on edit, noticed that there are 2 as well and both are "google" contacts for each person. Not sure how this happened, how can I  get rid of duplicates without having to manually delete each one?

Delete the thru gmail. Select all contacts view then check the ones to delete and save. Then resync to phone.
