--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey hey,

So, i have a dilema... My phone has been telling me to update to the new software for several months now, to which i have been rejecting. Then yesterday it froze. had to remove the battery to get it back to normal(last time it froze and i did this, i lost half my contacts!). Anyway, when i turned it back on it started the download. I'm able to stop it by manually turning off wifi and mobile internet- of course when i turn either back on it picks up where it left off in the download process. I tried turning the phone off for a while(with batt unattached) to see if this would stop the process. No such luck... it currently has V1.5.. After reading some of the reviews of 2.1, i'm not convinced i want it.

I don't use this phone to it's full capacity with linking it to Gmail for contact backup(don't really want them all in my gmail). I tried to open another fake gmail account and they now require a cell number to send a confirming text to(which defeats the purpose of anonymity!) I'm kinda sick of everything being linked and traced these days! Nothing to hide but my personal freedom to NOT be tracked... Blah,blah,blah... What i want to do is be able to easily backup my contacts not using Gmail(or other email provider) or outlook, in case i can't get the update to stop- which is ABSOLUTLEY REDICULOUS that "they" can't design an update without deleting your contacts?? Yeah-sounds fisheeeee...

I've reviewed all the topics under the "How To" section of this forum. Great posts! Thanks! Nothing really addresses this issue. The best i came up with is using exportcontacts program to add them to my desktop(at least i have them there now). My numbers are all stored under "phone"(as opposed to google) contacts.

My questions are-

1- does anyone know how to STOP the download of the new software?
-without doing ROOT(if this works)-it sounds like if i do this my contacts will be erased

2- is there a program that will upload my contacts from the csv file that is stored on my SD card back to my "people" phone directory? In case i have to take the new software...

Thank you all!!

The new software will not erase your contacts. 2.1 is much better than 1.5, you should upgrade..

One good way to back up contacts is go to google mail on the net and make a backup of the contacts there. Then anytime you lose your contacts you can resync them from the site to the phone.

There is a free app that uses csv and its called ExportContacts. Just search the market place...

Thanks for the post Jrocker23...

Not sure if you read my entire post, but i DID NOT want to use Gmail to back up. And I mentioned that i already have exportcontacts(thanks to a prior post by you-thanks!). So, wondering if there is a way to upload the contacts from my SD card once stored there(as a CSV). Doesn't seem that exportcontacts will do that...

And strange that you're saying that i WILL NOT loose my contacts because it says on my phone "your contact addresses will need to be resynced." when i add the new software. I'm assuming that means i'll loose the one on there. Is that not your interpetation?

Appreciate your expertise...

When you say contacts, I assume you are making phone contacts only. If they are phone only, yes they may get deleted. If it was through google setup, they would resync in about an hour at the most.

The update will not erase your memory card. You can try Mobile Backup II from the market, then backup with the app and after the update is done, restore them with the app.. I would test it before actual use...

Thanks! I downloaded the mobile backup II. And did the backup which is on the SD card now. Any suggestions on how to "test" it as you suggested? I can see the files when i open it up on my desktop, but it's in code of sorts...

Yea most programs code it. Just make sure you can restore back to the phone.

Good luck with the update
