I use a laptop that only has 2 USB ports on it. 1 is broken. The other is occupied by my mouse. So it gets to be a hassle having to keep unplugging my mouse and plugging in my phone just to transfer one thing. My solution > Go wireless. So if you are like me this will come in handy.

Keep in mind a 4th grader could do this it's so easy to set up.

ROOT IS NOT REQUIRED.

1. Go to the Android Marketplace and search for the app called SwiFTP. Download it. Don't worry, it's free.

2. Open up the app and just enter the username you are going to use, password if you want one, and just keep port number and "Stay within folder (e.g. /sdcard):" the same, unless you are considered advanced and know what you are doing when you change these. Click save.

3. Next step is to get some sort of FTP client on your computer. I prefer FlashFXP.
          Download link here > http://www.flashfxp.com/download.php

Since you only get a 30 day trial with FlashFXP here is another FTP client that is completely free. I'm not sure exactly how to use it so your own your own for this one.

            Download link here >
http://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=client

4. Download and install that.

5. Now lets go back to SwiFTP. Now that you have SwiFTP all set up you are going to open it (if you haven't already) and then you will see a button that says "Start". Go ahead and click that. You should see something that looks like this. Copy, write down, or just remember what I have the arrow pointing to.

6. Now back to FlashFXP.
Open it and then click this lightning bolt. Then click "Quick Connect"

7. Now the picture below should come up. Just fill in as I directed. Remember that address I told you to remember? You are going to put that into the spot I have a bunch of X's in. Don't forget to fill in the port number ( Default is 2121 which is why I put that there).

Now you should be all set. Just double click on "sdcard" folder and you will see all your stuff.

To transfer from phone to computer or computer to phone just simply grab the file and drag it over to the side that you want to copy it to.

Any questions feel free to comment!

Good Luck,

Scott

I'm afraid that the folks that would be most likely to comment on this would be those that have a pretty good computer background. Many internet sites offer downloadable files via FTP but I think few people realize that under the right circumstances the FTP protocol can be used between any two devices that recognize it. There are several FTP clients available in Android and each can be used as xbrxlunch has described with a computer that is set up to "talk" via FTP. Most Windows computers have a built-in FTP client/server but it is not activated (for security reasons). The above how-to is a great example of how to set it all up without having to fish around through a bunch of obscure Windows Admin tools.
