I have Handcent 2.9.31 and it works perfectly, but i want to at least try the newer updates and have 2.9.31 as a back-up if it doesn't work, this is where i saw .apk back-up discussed.

Can anyone help me through this??

Thanks,

I don't think you can for handcent and I could be wrong.  Running 2.9.36 and have encountered no problems with any updates.

Well I know that people have backed up the Handcant .apk cause i checked 4shared.com here for my version so I wouldn't have to do it myself, didn't find my specific version but found others, 2.9.29 for example.

And even if you can't with Handcent, do you know how to back up .apk's??

Here is some info I found:

1.Go to market install your application>Install Astro (if you dont already have it)> Open Astro and click menu to backup Apps.
2.Connect your Eris to a computer>Open My computer>Open SDCard>Open Backups folder>Drag out the files you want onto your desktop.

Personally I use OI file manager, as I prefer this to Astro.

That worked BRILIANTLY!!
There is no need to connect to the computer either (unless you want the .apk to do something else with it). Astro keeps the .apk in the app. I tested with an app that i don't care about, The Weather Channel, backed it up using Astro, uninstalled the app. I then went into Astro, found it in the backups folder ans reinstalled it from there :D

Thanks ^^

Glad you were able to do it.  I have done what you stated and was about to put that in my reply, but am not feeling so great today and  my brain is working half donkey so could not remember what I had done in the past.

So i backed my version up onto 4shared, 2.9.31

so far 2.9.37 is working pretty good, only been using it for about an hour or two, updates will follow  Smiley

Now i can actuallly update my apps without worry of screwing it up  Cool

Forgive my ignorance, but I am using OI File Mgr and I would like to back up some of my apps before this update comes, but i'm a bit confused.  Can I do this from my phone w/o the computer and how exactly is this done. I was looking in my OI app but couldn't see where to do this.  All I saw was my ringtones, pics, and vids.

Please help!  Sad

I am not familiar with OI but in Astro it is actually kind of hidden, when you hit the menu keyyou get a menu (duh lol) and you tap the "More" button and get an app manager (this is from memory, charging up after a bad battery day) i'll edit a bit later, maybe try searching through the app to find it.

Hope that helped

I wish I could say.  I have never backed up any of my apps for all three updates.  I went to market and redownloaded.  Maybe try the astro app that was mentioned or someone who has backed then up can direct  you.  Calling Monty, Jrocker, Eddie....lol..

To backup, download Astro File Manager from the market place and install.

Now open astro & you will see your memory card files, now press menu/tools and a menu will pop up, press Application Manager/Backup

Wait for it to load (only a couple of seconds). Now you will see your apps listed. Check the ones that you want to back up by pressing on the small white boxes on the right.

Once the files are selected, press the backup key near the upper left corner. They are now backed up in the backup folder.

To see your backups and reinstall the apps just follow the same way to get to your apps and then press the "Backed Up Apps" Tab (near upper right corner). you can check the apps to want to reinstall and then press the reinstall button.

Awesome! Thanks guys.....I will delete the OI File Mgr and use Astro instead.

One other thing....If you have to back up your apps to get them back after the update will Astro still be there or is that one you will back up as well?  And if you have to use Astro to reinstall the apps but its been wiped with the update would you just have to go get Astro from the Market again and redownload?

Yes just redownload astro once you have the update and once astro is installed, the memory card will be just like it was before the update.

Just reinstall all apps.

The OTA update may not erase anything. The general rule is OTA updates keep everything but updating any other way will clear all...

Good to know.  So I guess I don't really need to dl Astro and backup after all since that is the case.  Thanks!
