Hey everyone. I recently have taken an interest in finding a better application to handle my text messages. The default one just doesn't seem to do everything I would like it to. I have tried both Handcent SMS and ChompSMS, but they both seemed to run slowly on my phone. Does everyone have this problem? I have turned off notifications to the default one, but the applications seemed to still run slow. I uninstalled and now using the default. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions to make them run more smooth? Are they any other applications you would suggest? Thank you for your time.

It sounds to me like you could use a few tips in general about certain settings of your phone.. I have used Hancent for a long time now, and have no issues.. Changing some things like Screen Animations, text input prediction and correction, etc.. can speed up your phone a TON.. also, clearing your cache from a few apps should help a lot too..

There's an app called sms popup, it's (I'm assuming) just like the popup on Handcent, which I personally use. What version of handcent did you use? I personally didn't upgrade for fear of it running slow or just not working, the version I'm on, ha I can't find it Embarrassed, anyway it runs great for me, and I'm 15 so I text more then is A) humanly possible and B) necessary. Haha so maybe try an earlier version of handcent, I'm sure you could find it on 4shared.com
Search: handcent.apk
Or you can find it haha, I would search right now but I'm on the phone and it's about to die, edit may be coming soon, just for you guys Smiley haha

EDIT: I'm running 2.9.31, it's currently at 2.9.35

I believe this is a link to handcent 2.9.29, again, I'm on my Eris, almost dead haha
And 2.9.29, I believe is before they introduced ads.

Let me know how this works. If you do it Smiley

Use handcent now with swype and have had no issues so far.  I do clean caches and regularly clean text threads.

settings> applications>manage applications , let it load and find the app like browers hit it and you will see cache.  If its lit up you can clear.

I don't know what version I used. I just went to the market and downloaded it from the most popular list. I appreciate all of your replies and will try them all.
