There are some options bu they are not a ton better. Yea I often ask my iphone friends, what is more important, an app or a phone call? I do wish that the camera (and  some other apps) worked better on the Eris but I have a reliable phone that ALWAYS has service. Anyway, I will definitely look for a better camera on my next phone. May be worth checking out.
