I bought some verizon ringtones and they were sent to me in a text message...the instructions on the verizon site said to open the message and to select the options menu then to save the attachment as a ringtone to the phone.  but when I recieved the text and opened it, I can't find the options menu and so I can't seem to get these ringtones to my phone!  HELP please!

Long press the text message or attachment and a menu will pop up with the option to save it to the SD Card.

And welcome to the board.

Can yo find it when you try to change your default ringtone? It should show up in  the list of available choices.
A great app for exploring the files on your SD card from the phone is ASTRO file. You can download it from the market for free.

Using ASTRO, you can find out what type of file it is by long pressing the file and selecting details.
The file may not be in the right folder. It should be in the "media" folder. The directory of the media folder is "audio" > "notifications" "ringtones" (without the quotes)
