DOES ANYONE ELSE HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE SENSITIVITY OF THE TOUCH SCREEN.  WHEN DIALING A PHONE NUMBER ANYTHING NEAR THE LOWER CENTER OF SCREEN WILL NOT ACTIVATE.  SO ANY NUMBERS WITH 0 OR 1 ETC.  I CAN NOT DIAL.  ALSO TYPING A "Z" IS IMPOSSIBLE.

Yes more info is needed. Did you try a factory reset? ( this will delete all your data on the phone, it will not erase your memory card).

It could also be your digitizer is going bad.

thanks for advice.  I called HTC tech repair; they told me to send it back.  My Eris is more than 2 years old so the warranty is over.  I'm wondering if I should just get a new cell w/keyboard next and forget cells w/touch screens if HTC is having this as a frequent issue.  I loved my Eris.  I am trying to find out if this >(touch screen sensitivity breaking down) is a common thing or very rare.

Yes.  I have the same problem.  The a does not work and the 7 does not work.  I had the phone since 2009 with no other issues.  I love the phone...but this is getting to be a major headache.

I can change the orientation when typing a message and use the e in a different location, but the number pad on the phone does not rotate.  I have reset the phone-- no change.

Any other ideas??

I'm no expert, far from it.  I don't even know what is stock or rooted.  I purchased Eris from Verizon store.  I never downloaded any dialers.  Don't know what a dialer is.

I did find someone's comment very helpful.  Holding a number nearby and sliding it to the zero or the intended key that I need... helps me complete my typing.

Try to get a replacement at verizon. The phones screen is bad.

The only other thing to try is a factory reset but that will delete everything on your phone. It wont delete anything on your memory card so dont worry.

To do a reset, menu-settings-privacy-factory reset...

I think this problem is occur only in your device or in the models which you have i have experience with touch screen but never faced same problems.

Hey i would like to add If these things are happening while the phone is plugged in, I would suspect the charger or even the usb cord. If that is not the case, I would then make sure I did not have an antivirus app. If that is not the case, it seems you may have a failing proximity sensor or digitizer.
hope u get it checked..
thanks...
