I just read this news item:
"To read Gmail in your desired language, you need to check if your iOS device or Android phone's native language has been set accordingly. For instance, if you want to read your Gmail in French, then set the iPhone or Android phone's native language as French. Then just go to gmail.com from the mobile web browser and the Gmail interface will appear in French automatically.'
On my Eris there are only two choices of native languages: English and Spanish. Does anybody know how to add other languages? Thanks

I know the standard ROM only comes with English and Spanish support by default.

Note, this wont affect the email content, as my phone is setup for English and I receive emails in Spanish all the time. Also, my son uses his in English, but he receives email in French all the time.

To get the full Android OS operating in French, you have to change the locale from whatever you have now (normally en_US) to French for Canada (fr_CA), French for Belgium (fr_BE), French for Switzerland (fr_CH) or French for France (fr_FR).

I know the MoDaCo ROMs include a setting to change locales directly.
There's also an app on the market to change the locales on the phone.

Attached the code to the app in the Market.

Thanks, I expect that will work if the language is written in Latin alphabet such as English, French and left to right.  But what about other languages such as Russian, Hindi, Arabic etc. that use different lettering which is what that quote was about ? Any thoughts?

I know for sure the support for a lot of non-Latin languages is included in Gingerbread.

Some non-Latin are supported in FroYo, as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Russian.

The AOSP includes a lot of other locales strings. I am not sure if alternative sources like Cyanogen also include all the locales.
