So my phone had the issue where it scrolls to the left on its own. I go the Verizon Service Center and they replace it with a new phone. One day later and my new phone has the exact same problem!

Now what?

You are lucky. If you go to google and type in Driod Eris Scr... look what comes up under the auto complete. It seems a lot of people do have this issue.

Verizon replaced my Eris with the regular Droid after two Erises failed on me.  Liked the little phone just had no luck with it.

My Eris is a really reliable little piece of equipment.

Trackball issues are common, and seem to be related to the location of the USB/Charging port.

I use a really thin USB cable and charge my Eris most of the time from the computer.
No problems whatsoever.

Don't use it when its on the charger the heat loosens the trackball up a lil and that was cause it. I may have found a way to fix it but testing is going on now

I am watching this topic because my phone is doing the same thing. It just started today. If it continues I am going to unroot and try to get an incredible. This will be my second replacement for the same issue.

Let me know if you find a solution frrrrunkis!  Kiss

if the problem persists replace the trackball. after you get a new trackball in he problem goes away! I found a pretty red one that goes with my red and black layout. and it cost maby a total of $5 to get it done.  And you can do it yourself! i did and im never gonna look back! WARNING: if you screw it up all the warenties and void and you CAN NOT get it replaced for free so just be extra careful!

Replacing the trackball does not always solve the issue. I already replaced mine just because I wanted a blue one.
It seems like the charging process puts some heat on the trackball mechanism (controller, roll reader) that makes it prone to break if used while charging.

Frrrrrunkis has been working on a possible solution, on the same way of replacing the trackball, except he is putting some heat shield material between the charger and the other circuits. Seems to be working until now.

I will take this post as an opportunity to say:

Let's be honest. Our DROID Eris' are running their courses. Beginning of 2011, most of our contracts will be up and we will be eligible for a new device (or VZW will offer early upgrades to the latest and greatest phones). The Eris was, and still is a great device, however, the spectrum has changed so dramatically in it's very short lifespan (almost a year now!) that it has become obsolete and we all want that next best, or nearest to next best Android device.

What's my point? The Eris is a indirect clone of the HTC Hero at Sprint - which also has had trackball problems. That being said, how many phones coming out, or that have come out in the recent past that have trackballs anymore? It's a moot problem, unless you are for some reason planning on retaining your Eris for a prolonged period of time. Hell, BlackBerry trackballs are awful too. HTC did it right when they did the optical trackpad with the Incredible...
