DJ, why root because it opens a world that without rooting you can only dream of. Easiest way to put it

It's pronounced es-kal-uh-vee. Learn it. Know it.

I once heard someone refer to their rooted phone as "my phone now wrapped in magic". I think it is fitting.

Jrocker is right. Look around in the development center part of the forum, under all things root and ROM. Check out some screen shots, read and learn all about your Eris and then make a decision about rooting.

For the "what", and the "how", of root, check out "all things root and rom" put for the why: In my opinion it opens up your phone to all the new and best things it can do. It gives you the accessibility to make your phone really yours.

It's really not that difficult to root now.  Great developers paved the way for noobs like me...  I absolutely hated my Eris before I rooted.  Rooting and running siks roms prevented this phone from going to the gun range with me... as a Target.

Rooting your phone opens it up to endless possibilities. You can install apps to improve the performance of your phone, install custom ROMs and allows you to customize your phone even more. Basically, for the Eris, make it better than it already is.
