Greetings earthlings!

I'm a new forum dweller here, and I wanted to see what I could find out about rooting my phone and putting a stable Froyo 2.2 ROM.

I hope I can still root my Eris, as I installed the 2.1 update without thinking. My geek senses tell me that the current rooting method may only work with the 1.6 firmware. Is there a proven 2.1 stock root method available yet?

I'm wanting to put a custom Froyo 2.2 ROM on my Eris to try and do a few things:
1. Take advantage of the speed enhancements of Froyo, because the hardware isn't as powerful as say the Droid or Droid X, and the Eris could really use a decent speed increase. Would also help emulators too. ^_^

2. Get rid of SenseUI. I don't really mind it, if but for one thing: The Wiimote app won't work with SenseUI phones due to a SenseUI bug! I'm a huge Wiimote fan, and use my Wiimote and Classic Controller as a gamepad with my PC using a Bluetooth Dongle and a scripter called GlovePIE. So I would love to be able to play my emulators with my Wiimote.

3. Try the wi-fi tethering without paying the crazy $30+ a month fee for it. Its bad enough I have to pay for 500 minutes when I use only 20.

From skimming the forums here, it would seem that Eris ROM's are behind all the other more popular phones because only a few of us bothered to buy one. So it sounds like its going to be awhile before there is a stable Froyo 2.2 ROM for Eris out there. However, I also feel that there isn't much chance of the Eris getting a 2.2 stock update, as the phone is going to be phased out soon (but I'm still going to be stuck with it :/ ).

Seems these forums would be the place to learn about such things.

So am I crazy or what?

So let the craziness begin!  Rootet my phone this AM and after some prep work have installed KaosFroyo 2.3 and the millions of apps I carry round in my pocket. Like it so far with a couple of caveats -
Camera is funky (as expected - takes pix but the viewfinder is hash).
Cannot seem to attach to my WPA 2 secured router - shuts down while the key is being entered.
No way to assign custom ringtones to individual contacts/groups (really? one ringtone?)

Seems to be running OK - Fast for the most part - gets kinda choppy at times. I like it w/o sense (surprise!)

Anybody else whose running this run into these issues?

Answering my own questions - I must be out on the bleeding edge here.  There is a way to set ringtones by contact - it's just in a weird place. For the record, click on the contact, Menu>Options, not edit contact.  Embarrassed

WiFi still scans and shuts down but when I get it in to work tommorrow and into wifi-target-rich environment we'll give it a real test.

No Overclocking yet, STILL setting up....

Then I am holding off on Froyo until I hear more from you.  Use wifi alot on phone and do not want any problems with this.  Cannot wait to hear more!

So you can't get wifi working at all so far? I have not had a problem, connects every time, home and work

I'll know more tomorrow but at home, if you stat it up it scans, sees all the local networks, and then shuts down before you can put the key in.

I figured it out! 2.2 handles Wifi a bit different than 2.1. To fix it I shut down Y5, turned off all the mobile connections and THEN turned on WiFi. Finally it would stay up long enough for me to put the WPA key in. Turned everything back on and...Golden!!

Now I just need to find a good camcorder package.... Cheesy
