I'm just scared... I've been reading many of the posts here, and I think I'm nearly convinced that I want to try it. I just can't get myself to take the plunge....   Maybe tomorrow... I'm just afraid it's going to become an addictive habit. I'm already constantly changing my screens as it is.... I may be just too overwhelmed with all of the options that will open up when I finally root....  Someone convince me that it's the right thing to do.

you can root and keep your original 2.1 all you have to do is flash a custom kernel to overclock, that's what i have now, everything working with more cpu power, enough to make your phone feel that much smoother,i was scared to root at first but its worth it for a whole i went crazy flashing roms but at the end i just wanted everything to work like its supposed to with more speed

what i did was root 1ST you need the original rom with the july update by running the 2.1 ruu ,then i flashed zanfurs oc kernel that also flashes the files for wireless tether the file on his page is the one that says update.zip v3 ,it should have a description about the file, after that then i installed set cpu and oc,then download the wireless tether app from market to tether, which i tried and works, after that you can do what you want,i even use metamorph and it works to,i feel good that everything works plus speed, custom roms are awesome but there is always minor issues not that it affects that much but i just like to have everything working,i also removed some bloatware using root explorer.give it a try if you don't like it just flash a rom of choice.

if they look through your apps and see super user or set cpu or check your software and see a custom kernel, yes,if not your good.if you plan on returning your phone just go back by running the ruu, that's it.in most cases they wont but why take the risk if its so easy to unroot and go back to 100% original software.

Thanks everyone for the advice....  Pablo - I think I want to go your route.  I do like how the stock 2.1 runs; however, since I'm going to do it...I might as well give some custom ROMs a try first.  I've downloaded Nonsensikal v5.4 Vanilla as well as Kaos Froyo v34 because they seem to receive the most consistent praise.  Before I begin, just a few more clarification questions:

1)  Pablo - does your way allow me to save apps to SD?  Will the apps2sd app work with the phone once it's rooted or only if I go with a custom rom?  I tend to run low on internal memory, which was why I was leaning towards rooting in the first place.

2)  With Nonsensikal v5.4, do I have to follow the tutorials for partitioning my SD card using the apps2sd; or is this one of the custom roms considered to be 2.2 Froyo where it's built in already?  Will the ADW launcher work with this ROM?

Thanks everyone for your help!

Nonsensikal and Kaosfroyo are both Froyo 2.2 roms.  Do not partition your sd card for these roms.

I say stick with nonsensikal froyo.  Flashed v34 of kaosfroyo since its been a bit since sik released 5.4.  I know he has had some issues so its fine.  Got ancy.  Needed to flash. I am addicted.  Kaosfroyo is to slow. I keep lagging on the home screen.  No need to partition.

Thanks...will try Nonsensikal as soon as the Titanium Backup finishes.

Another question...is the "setCPU" app a must-have once rooted, or am I ok without it?

I would say get it. It will slow the CPU down if your phone gets to hot. You don't want to melt your phone.
