Jrocker is right task killer will interfere with it.  Also did you go to settings>cyanogenmod>performance and check JIT.  I do this and get 5.4 mflops.

Ok have been running overclocking widget for a few hours now and seems very stable. Has some good customizable options, very clean, straight forward. Uses less battery than setcpu (at least it seems to).

Only drawback for some is since its basically a widget only, you have to install to phone not sd card or the widget wont work. If you click on it in the app drawer it tells you to put the widget on one of your home screens and adjust settings there.

Im keeping it for now and using it. I like it so far...

Here is the XDA thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=505419

Here is a YouTube tutorial: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=10&ved=0CGIQtwIwCQ&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DX9Sn4Uz4pkM&ei=53A6TYrpDon2gAfK7ZyICQ&usg=AFQjCNGr-ZFAEBxMhQPG2dwkj-PvZ8qJZA

It is rather simple; just don't over do it or your phone will crash.

thanks for the updated links, will check them out.  I installed the overclock widget and will try to use that .  Rooted but on standard 2.1 and no 2.2 Roms.

will it really help improve performance much?

It will help performance but it also depends on what settings work best for your phone. You wioll have to experiment with different settings till you find what works best... its not hard. just some time to see what you like..

Look at my posts #37 and #59 in this thread. I've been running this speeds for months with very good results.

Ripley, turning JIT on did it for me. I just got my first 5.+ mflops run. Thanks!

I could have sworn that there was some reason I had JIT turned off... but I can't remember... it was interfering with something else... I dunno.

With some phones Jit will cause issues. if you start having problems, turn it off and reboot..

Yes, i have. I used the built in overclocking features... Not set cpu. (its basically both the same, except you can set profiles for screen off and such).

My phone and battery ran very well with the built in settings. 729 / 524 & on demand for me..
